Why Your Financial Anxiety Often Has Nothing to Do with Money: The Impact of Old Beliefs Around Money and Safety
Many people believe that their financial stress can be solved by increasing their income. Earning more seems like the logical answer to financial concerns. But in practice, we often see that the unease around money doesn't disappear once more starts flowing in. In fact, it can even intensify. Why is that? Because for many people, money has become more than just a practical tool. It has become a symbol of safety, control, and worthiness. What we’re really longing for isn’t more money—it’s inner peace and trust. And that’s precisely what is often undermined by the old beliefs and stories we unconsciously carry with us.
The script from your childhood still runs in the background
During a session with a client, it became clear just how strongly her inner script from the past still influenced her relationship with money. She grew up in an environment where safety wasn’t guaranteed. The belief that there was always "just enough" but never abundance led her, later in life, to feel solely responsible for her own financial security. Unconsciously, she had learned: I have to do it myself, I shouldn’t rely on others, I must be frugal, and above all: I cannot fail.
These beliefs embed themselves deeply into your system. You start making choices that feel safe but aren’t necessarily aligned with who you are or where you want to go. For example: holding on to a job that drains you because you're afraid you won’t be able to pay your rent otherwise. Or not taking the time to explore your creative path, fearing it won’t generate income. The old voice in your head keeps whispering: be careful, choose certainty, stay small.
Desire becomes suspicious the moment it costs money
Another theme that came up is how desire itself becomes suspicious as soon as it involves money. If you grew up with the belief that money must be saved and used sparingly, it can be hard to allow yourself anything extra. Even something like a course, a meaningful trip, or a sabbatical might feel like “luxury” instead of an investment in yourself. In the case of my client, this created inner conflict: she longed for space, adventure, and freedom—but felt guilty the moment money was involved. As if she had to prove her worth first by “doing it right.”
Letting go of that inner brake requires awareness. Because desire is not the enemy of safety. It’s the signpost pointing to what is truly aligned for you. Money can be a vehicle for movement—not a limitation. But first, you have to learn to recognize the inner voices that keep you small.
Your relationship with money mirrors your relationship with trust
One of the most powerful insights in the session was the realization that money often replaces trust. If deep down you don’t feel held—by others, by life, by something greater—then money becomes the place where everything gets projected. You may save too much or too little. You may hold on too tightly, or live like there’s no tomorrow. Both behaviors come from the same root: a lack of deeply felt trust that life will carry you, even when things are uncertain.
By allowing herself to drop into this space, as my client was able to do in trance, space emerged to reconnect with that trust. Not because everything was already taken care of, but because she could feel: I can handle this. I can stay connected to myself, even when the numbers in my bank account fluctuate. Then money becomes what it was always meant to be: a flowing medium—not a prison or a shield.
From control to freedom of choice
Ultimately, it’s about shifting from control to freedom of choice. Not because you suddenly become financially independent, but because you allow yourself to choose from a place of alignment. As she discovered, freedom isn’t found in a specific amount of money, but in reclaiming your own rhythm and needs. Are you allowed to do work that nourishes you? Are you allowed to rest without guilt? Are you allowed to receive, without having to “earn” it first?
Once you can answer those questions from within, your entire energy around money shifts. And the external world will naturally begin to shift with it.
